How to avoid a heart attack or stroke by following these 7 tips

Heart problems are nothing to treat lightly, therefore you need to do as much as you can to prevent them. Fortunately, there are solutions, and there is nothing so difficult that you can’t do.

Here are the most important 7 habits you should start doing as soon as possible, to prevent any heart damage in the future:

  1. Be active

It is proven that at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day lowers the risk of heart attack. You don’t have to go to the gym, you just have to walk, jog, go swimming or do any activity that you like. A day or two of the week you can try a heavier training session. You can even split up those 30 minutes of exercise every day.

  1. Stop smoking

Maybe you already knew this but this is very important. Smoking increases the risk of heart problems with 200 to 400 percent, depending on frequency and your genetics. Passive smoking is not a safer option either. People exposed to secondhand smoke have a 25 to 30 percent higher chance of developing a heart issue.

  1. Change your diet

Well don’t change it per say, but adopt a healthier lifestyle.  Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish and lean meats help you promote a well-balanced diet. Processed foods contain a lot of preservatives or added sugar and sodium, which are very bad for your health.

  1. Give up alcohol

Or drink in moderation. Alcohol can help your heart but it has to be consumed in moderate quantities. This would mean 1 drink per day for women and 2 for men.

  1. Shape up your body

By shape up we mean to improve cholesterol numbers and lower your blood pressure and blood sugar levels, by losing some weight in a healthy way.

  1. Go for dark chocolate

Dark chocolate is filled with antioxidants and other nutritional properties that protect your heart. The higher the percent of cocoa, the better! Take care though of how much you consume per day, trying not to exceed three chunks.

  1. Get regular check-ups

Normally, you wait to have some symptoms and then you go to the doctor. That is not the best option. Try to make sure that you’re scheduling a comprehensive physical examination at least once a year. As we age, different health variables must be taken into account. Males and females have different health needs as well and best is to talk to a specialist about your specific situation.
